A Uppsala University-led team conducted the most extensive geoarchaeological study of Egypt’s Karnak Temple, revealing its origins and ties to ancient creation myths. Analysis of 61 sediment cores and ceramics shows the site became habitable around 2300-1980 BCE as Nile channels shifted, forming a natural island ideal for settlement. The temple’s location, high ground rising from water, mirrors myths of the creator god emerging from chaos, suggesting the site was deliberately chosen for its symbolic landscape.
