A Starlink satellite has apparently exploded in low Earth orbit after SpaceX reported losing contact due to an unspecified “anomaly.” Space-tracking firm LeoLabs detected dozens of fragments near the satellite, suggesting it broke apart about 560 km above Earth. SpaceX said the debris poses no threat to the International Space Station or NASA’s upcoming Artemis II launch, and the fragments are expected to burn up in the atmosphere within weeks. A similar incident occurred in December. The event highlights the growing congestion in low Earth orbit, where more than 24,000 objects, including about 10,000 Starlink satellites, are currently tracked.
