Astronaut snaps salty, pink Valentine's Day 'heart' shining in Argentina

An astronaut aboard the ISS captured a pink, heart-shaped salt lake, **Salinas Las Barrancas**, in Argentina’s lowlands. Its color comes from algae **Dunaliella salina** and other microorganisms, which shift with rainfall and salinity. Locals mine up to 330,000 tons of salt annually using traditional methods. The lake also supports wildlife, including yellow cardinals and pink Chilean flamingos, whose colors come from carotenoids in algae-fed crustaceans.
