Ahead of a major Beijing military parade, China is set to unveil a truck-mounted high-energy laser system touted as the “most powerful laser air defence system in the world.” The weapon, likely a 10 kW OW5-A10, is designed to intercept drones at low cost, part of a broader showcase of advanced PLA technology, including YJ-class anti-ship missiles and potential stealth drones. Analysts caution that while China is rapidly developing and displaying such systems, operational effectiveness remains uncertain, and the global race for laser and directed-energy weapons is progressing in parallel among major militaries.
