After 30 years of Conference of the Parties talks, worsening climate metrics raise doubts about their effectiveness. Around 40,000 people will attend COP30 in Belém, Brazil, returning to the country that hosted the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, where world leaders, including George Bush, signed pledges for sustainable growth. That summit birthed the UNFCCC and hopes for real change, but after 29 COPs, ecosystems are collapsing, extreme weather is intensifying, and the natural world Rio promised to safeguard continues to decline.
