A new brain-imaging study challenges the belief that the brain reorganizes after limb loss. Researchers tracked amputees for up to five years using fMRI and found the primary somatosensory cortex—responsible for sensing the body—remains largely unchanged, contradicting decades of neuroscience. The findings could improve prosthetics, phantom limb pain treatments, and sensory restoration, showing the brain’s body map is more stable than previously thought.
