A new study finds Earth’s core may hold 9–45 times more hydrogen than all the oceans, making it the planet’s largest hydrogen reservoir. Using atom probe tomography under extreme pressure and heat, researchers showed hydrogen entered the core during formation 4.5 billion years ago, not via later comets. This helps explain Earth’s early hydrogen delivery and suggests the core’s composition played a key role in the planet’s development.
