In the summer of 1985, as a 14-year-old gamer, I visited the Commodore computer show in London and was starstruck by Julian Rignall, a Zzap!64 reviewer. Games magazines like Zzap, Crash, and Computer & Video Games were the social media influencers of the 80s, making reviewers the stars. Behind the scenes, it was chaotic—manual production processes and teams working in cramped, low-budget offices. Yet, they defined an era, pushing the boundaries of game journalism, and paving the way for future publications.
