China is expanding the Shidaowan high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) nuclear power plant in Shandong Province, the world’s first fourth-generation nuclear plant. The first phase involves adding two domestically developed third-generation Hualong One reactors, boosting power generation to 20 billion kilowatt-hours annually and expanding heating supply. Future plans include four more reactors, raising the plant’s total capacity to over five million kilowatts and offsetting significant coal consumption and carbon emissions. The HTGR plant features small, high-temperature-resistant fuel spheres, ensuring continuous operation without frequent refueling.
