Scientists at King’s College London built the world’s hottest engine, a microscopic particle held by electric fields in a “Paul Trap” that reaches temperatures hotter than the sun’s core. The engine sometimes defies thermodynamics, cooling when heated due to random microscale fluctuations. Beyond physics, researchers say it could model protein folding, key to treating diseases, by acting as an analog computer to simulate how proteins assemble.
